Cultural Capital

Cultural Capital

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours and skills that a child can draw upon and which demonstrates their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence. It is what pupils acquire alongside traditional academic knowledge. Cultural capital is one of the key skills a child will draw upon to be successful beyond school life. It promotes social mobility and success. Cultural capital gives a child power, helps them achieve their goals, become successful and rise up the social ladder.

Ofsted says that cultural capital “is the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said, and helping engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement”. (Ofsted School Inspection Handbook 2019)

At Inspire Academy, our curriculum has been carefully designed to instil high aspirations and encourage them to become resilient, life-long learners and continually develop their cultural capital. Gradually widening children’s experiences as they progress through school, we plan for children to have progressively rich and engaging learning and experiences starting in EYFS and beyond. We offer a wide range of trips and experiences that covers many different topics and areas of study.
