On this page you can learn all about what is happening in Year 1

The focus of our maths lessons changes weekly to suit the needs of our pupils, we use assessments and previous lessons to identify any gaps and needs.

Throughout the autumn term we will be covering the following:

  • Place value – counting forwards and backwards to 100, reading and writing numbers in numerals and words to 20 as well as understanding that tens and ones are different.
  • One more and one less.
  • Addition and Subtraction – one of the most popular methods was to put the bigger number in our head before either counting forwards or backwards to find the answer.
  • Learning to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour.
  • Coin recognition. Challenging ourselves to add coins to find the total value.
  • 2D and 3D shapes and can we recall the names for each shape?

Maths lessons are structured to allow your children to fulfil their potential, mastery and greater depth opportunities are present in each lesson.

Throughout the autumn term will be covering the following:

  • Learning how to write captions and lists.
  • Writing recounts. It is important for the children to understand that to write a recount they need a strong introduction using the four W’s – who, what, where and when. It is important for time adverbials to be present in this writing.
  • Writing stories, learning to plan an exciting story before writing it. We will be using Pie Corbett’s ‘Talk for Writing’ to help us with this. Talk for Writing is based on the principles of how children learn. It enables them to imitate the language they need before writing their own version.
  • Writing instructions using imperative ‘bossy’ verbs and clear steps.

Phonics will continue much in the same way as reception. The children will continue to learn new phonemes and graphemes daily and will apply their phonics knowledge to their reading and writing. Each year, the children in year one sit a phonics screening check. This is a short test to confirm whether each child is able to decode to an appropriate standard. More information will follow regarding this in due course.

Throughout the autumn term we will be covering the following:

  • Learning about the four seasons and the weather associated with each season. The children will make season spinners and explore the changing seasons first hand.
  • Our human senses. We will be learning about our sense of smell, taste, touch, sight and sound and will hopefully get a visit from a guide dog in training to hear about the work they do to support the visually impaired.
  • The children will be planning and conducting various experiments. We will be learning about how to conduct an experiment, concentrating on a predication, what equipment we need, our results and a conclusion. We will also speak about a fair test and what that means.
  • Identifying everyday materials. We will be describing the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials. We are also going to be comparing and grouping materials, identifying and naming them.

Throughout the autumn term we will be covering the following:

  • Naming and locating the four countries and capital cities in the UK. Paddington Bear will help us with this topic. We will be learning to speak Welsh, eat afternoon tea, try Scotch pancakes and eat some Irish potato cakes.
  • We will be comparing the Amazon Rainforest to Ashton. The children will be looking at where the Amazon is, what or who lives there and what it is like in comparison to Ashton. We will also research the type of animals which live in each location as well as the landscape and weather.

Throughout the autumn term we will be covering the following:

  • Learning all about religion; what religion is and why it is important to respect the beliefs of others.
  • We will also be learning about Christianity and Christmas. The children will be researching the religious symbols, places of worship and learning about the meaning of Christmas.

Throughout the autumn term we will be covering:

  • How to stay safe on the internet.
  • The children will be creating their own algorithms for the bee bots. The children will learn to understand why algorithms have to be so precise too!
  • We are going to be using technology purposefully to create, organise and store digital content. The children will be turning in to TV chefs, they will be filming a popular cookery show at Inspire! This will link in nicely with our English work as we are writing instructions!
